Old Velasco was one of the oldest towns in Texas and served as the port of entry for more than 25,000 settlers from 1821 to 1835. It was the scene of the first armed conflict leading to the Texas Revolution in 1832. In the mid-1800s, it became a resort for wealthy plantation families. It declined after the Civil War and the 1875 hurricane. This school is named for Velasco.
