Great Divide is a locally owned alpine ski area on Mount Belmont northwest of Helena, near the Continental Divide, with skiing there beginning in the early 1940s when a trail was built for the 1942 Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Races. The nonprofit Belmont Ski Club owned and operated the area from 1941 through much of 1985, after which the Taylor family continued its development. A major milestone came in 1986 with the first chairlift to the summit, followed by additional lifts and expanded terrain. Today it offers more than 1,600 acres, over 140 trails, terrain parks supported by snowmaking, lessons, youth programs, and regular night skiing.
