Banzai Pipeline
Pop Culture
Banzai Pipeline is a world-famous surf reef break off Ehukai Beach Park at Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore, celebrated for heavy waves that pitch over a shallow reef into thick barrels. Named in December 1961 during filming by Bruce Brown after a nearby pipeline construction project, it quickly became central to surf culture and inspired a 1963 hit song. The break includes First Reef, Backdoor Pipeline, and, in larger surf, Second and Third Reef. Its beauty is matched by extreme danger from jagged lava and shallow water, yet it has drawn elite surfers and major competitions, making it one of surfing's ultimate proving grounds.
