Mount Craig, in North Carolina’s Black Mountains, rises to 6,647 feet and is recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey as the second highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains and in eastern mainland North America, behind Mount Mitchell. Named for Governor Locke Craig, who helped create Mount Mitchell State Park in 1915 and protect the range from heavy logging, the summit lies within both the state park and Pisgah National Forest. Its standing was affected by changing survey methods: once ranked third, it was raised to second in 1993 after satellite GPS measurements revised its elevation upward, placing it slightly above Kuwohi in current published figures.
