The building was completed in 1832, when Major F.C. Armstrong became the first agent, and the village became known as Skullyville. In 1857 the Choctaw Nation adopted a new constitution in convention here. From 1858 to 1861 it was a stage station for the Overland Mail to San Francisco. Leading Choctaws here included Tandy Walker, Edwin McCurtain, and Thos. D. Ainsworth.
