On September 19, 1863, in the morning, Brigadier General William B. Hazen's Brigade of Palmer's Division, Crittenden's Corps, including the 9th Indiana under Colonel Isaac C.B. Suman, 6th Kentucky under Colonel George T. Shackleford, 41st Ohio under Colonel Aquila Wiley, 124th Ohio under Colonel Oliver H. Payne, and Battery F, 1st Ohio, under Lieutenant Giles J. Cockerill, arrived at Lee and Gordon's Mill from the vicinity of Glass' Mill at 1 o'clock a.m. At 11 o'clock the division, with Hazen's Brigade leading, was ordered to the left on the Lafayette Road to report to Gen. Thomas at the center, where the engagement had been progressing for several hours. The command reached the Poe Field at noon and immediately moved southeastwardly in echelon into action, with Hazen's Brigade on the left and advanced 80 paces.
