Cruft's Brigade, part of Palmer's Division in Crittenden's Corps and commanded by Brigadier General Charles Cruft, included the 31st Indiana under Colonel John T. Smith, 1st Kentucky under Lieutenant Colonel Alva R. Hadlock, 2d Kentucky under Colonel Thomas D. Sedgewick, 90th Ohio under Colonel Charles H. Rippey, and 1st Ohio Light Battery B under Lieutenant Norman A. Baldwin. At 10 P.M. on September 18, 1863, after waiting at Crawfish Springs since sundown, the brigade moved from Lee and Gordon's Mill and formed across the Scott place, with its right near the Chickamauga River and its left extending northwestward across the LaFayette Road, where it remained until 11 o'clock A.M. on September 19. At that hour it was ordered forward with the division toward the battle then raging east of the Kelly Field. It proceeded rapidly to the vicinity of the Poe Field, from which position it immediately moved southeastward into action.
