Angelina National Forest is a 153,180-acre protected woodland in the piney woods of East Texas, in the Neches River Basin and around Sam Rayburn Reservoir across parts of four counties. Its landscape is marked by longleaf pine in the south and loblolly and shortleaf pine in the north, making it part of one of Texas's most heavily wooded regions. People have lived in this area for about 8,000 years, as shown by archaeological sites. The forest took shape through state and federal conservation efforts in the 1930s and today is valued for its extensive wildlife, nearly 300 bird species, two wilderness areas, and enduring ecological importance.
