The Barker-Cypress Archeological Site in Cypress, Harris County, preserves evidence of prehistoric life along Cypress Creek and has become an important record of long-term human activity in the area. In 2009, archaeologists investigating the creek before an erosion-control project uncovered thousands of Akokisa-related artifacts, including stone tools, arrow points, and pottery shards. The finds ranged in age from about 8,100 B.C. through the early and late ceramic periods to the era when Europeans began arriving in North America in the 10th century. Recovered artifacts were to be preserved and studied at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas.
