Original Plat Historical Block No. 8 was the site of the first post office on Lot No. 4 in 1853, with John W. Vaughn as postmaster; the first dry goods store and grocery store on Lot No. 4 in 1852, operated by Wiley and Vaughn; the first house erected, John Miller’s house on Lot No. 1 in 1852; and the boarding house of Zion F.&A.M. No. 197, a Masonic Lodge, on Lot No. 4 in 1855, with John Higgins as Worshipful Master, John W. Vaughn as Secy, and James C. Wiley as Treas.
