Deep Creek Lake, like all Maryland lakes, is manmade and was created in 1925 for a hydroelectric generating station. It is considered to have good water quality that supports some of the best freshwater fishing in Maryland, excellent recreational activities such as swimming and boating, and a robust and diverse native submerged aquatic vegetation population. Since 2009, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has conducted water quality and habitat monitoring there to support lake management decisions, and it actively manages invasive submerged aquatic vegetation such as hydrilla while working to restore native submerged aquatic vegetation essential for reducing nutrients, stabilizing sediments, and supporting fish habitats, along with educational workshops to engage the community. The Launch Steward program was implemented to inspect boats entering the lake and reduce the threat of invasive species. The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation, the Department of Natural Resources Lake Management Office, and the University of Maryland Extension's "10 in 10" project and WaterWise/Rain Barrel Program have addressed erosion, sediment control, and stormwater management. A state-funded demonstration project in Arrowhead Cove began in the fall of 2023 with lowered lake levels, installation of a cofferdam, and removal of more than 11,000 cubic yards of sediment transported to the county landfill, providing greater water depths for increased boating access and recreational activities, while further assessments will determine whether such costly mechanical dredging is viable for future sediment management.
