Jimmie Davis State Park in northern Louisiana lies on a wooded peninsula along Caney Creek Lake near Chatham. Opened in 1996 as Caney Creek Lake State Park, it was renamed in 2003 for nearby Quitman native Jimmie Davis, a country-western singer, film star, and two-term Louisiana governor. Water recreation shapes the park, with boat launches, a fishing pier, cabins, lodges, and campsites close to the reservoir. Caney Lake is especially noted for bass fishing and produced Louisiana’s state-record bass as of 2010. The park’s pine and hardwood woods also support cycling and wildlife such as deer, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, opossums, and waterfowl.
