Andy Gump, a celebrated cartoon character introduced in 1917 as the first daily comic strip in the Chicago Tribune, was represented by a statue first erected in 1924 on the Lake Geneva estate of his creator, Sidney Smith. Smith, a beloved cartoonist, lived in Lake Geneva from 1922 until his untimely death in 1935. Given by Robert J. Twyman and the Chicago Tribune, the statue honored the Lake Geneva resident whose irrepressible character had brightened the daily lives of millions throughout the world.
