Larwill, formerly Huntsville, was laid out on November 13, 1854 along the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railroad at the corners of four farms owned by Henry McLallen, Sr., Jesse S. Perrin, Thomas J. Hammontree, and Truman Hunt. Huntsville was changed to Larwill on March 8, 1866 in honor of William and Joseph Larwill, resident engineers in charge of constructing the railroad from Columbia City to Warsaw.
