Buchanan County was formed in 1858 from Tazewell and Russell and named for James Buchanan, President of the United States from 1857 to 1861. Kentucky’s first permanent settlement was made at Harrodsburg in 1774. Kentucky County was established in 1776 and was represented in the Virginia legislature by Daniel Boone. Kentucky was admitted to the Union as the fifteenth state in 1792.
