The Pamplin Pipe Factory in Pamplin, Virginia, preserves the remains of a once-prominent clay pipe industry that gave the town national recognition. Operating from around 1879, it was said at its height to be the largest clay pipe manufacturer in the United States. The surviving wood-framed factory, brick kiln, and collapsed chimney reflect large-scale production that continued under several owners through the peak of the trade around 1919 and lasted until a 1938 public auction. Later efforts focused on novelty, souvenir, and local handmade pipes but failed to become profitable, and the company dissolved in 1952. Pipes from Pamplin have been found nationwide, underscoring the site's industrial and archaeological significance.
