Cowles Mountain, in San Diego’s San Carlos area, is the city’s highest point at 1,593 feet and lies within Mission Trails Regional Park. Named for rancher and businessman George A. Cowles, it was long also known as “S” Mountain for a huge letter painted on its slope in 1931 by San Diego State College students. The military had it covered during World War II, and repainting later ceased for environmental protection. Today the peak is one of San Diego’s most popular urban hikes, valued for its summit views. Its rocks and terrace features also preserve evidence of an ancient coastal landscape.
