U.S. Route 1 was designated on November 11, 1926, and begins at the international border between Fort Kent, Maine, and Clair, New Brunswick. Its first mile extends from that border to the Dube House, built in 1840 and one of the oldest homes still standing in Fort Kent. From there, Route 1 continues south through the Saint John Valley, Aroostook County, and the coastal regions of Maine before ultimately ending in Key West, Florida. Originally 2,446 miles long, U.S. Route 1 is the easternmost route in the main north-south United States Highway System and is known for scenic views and varied cultures and experiences.
