Wayne County honored the Confederate men who marched beneath the Stars and Bars, praising their banner as gory yet wreathed with glory and declaring that it would live in song and story though its folds were in the dust. The monument was erected by the Lundy Gunn Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy on August 2, 1911, with the inscription "Lest we forget."
