Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, began as Henry Phipps Jr.’s 1893 gift to educate and entertain the public through formal gardens and exotic plants in a Victorian glasshouse designed by Lord & Burnham. Expanded over time from its original nine rooms to a larger complex with themed conservatories, aquatic gardens, seasonal displays, and the Tropical Forest, it became both a historic landmark and a major botanical institution. Since 1993 it has been privately managed while remaining city-owned, and it is also notable for sustainable design, green-certified facilities, and a significant collection of glass art integrated with horticultural displays.
