Tory's Cave sits in Springfield, Vermont, above the Connecticut River across from Charlestown, New Hampshire, linking it closely to settlements on both sides of the valley. With two entrances, including one that overlooks the river, and an interior chamber large enough for several people, it offered a practical refuge. In 1781, during the Revolutionary War, Shem Kemfield, a Loyalist from Charlestown, briefly stayed there with several companions. That short occupation became the site’s defining story, making the cave a small but vivid reminder of divided loyalties and shelter in the Connecticut River borderland during wartime.
