Stellafane, founded on Breezy Hill in Springfield, Vermont, grew from Russell W. Porter’s telescope-making classes and the Springfield Telescope Makers into a pioneering center of amateur astronomy. Established in the early twentieth century, it developed from the original Pink Clubhouse and its telescopes into a larger complex that includes Porter's distinctive Turret Telescope and newer eastern facilities for observing, meetings, and camping. Its annual convention, begun in 1926, became the longest-running astronomical convention in the United States and draws amateur telescope makers and astronomers from around the world. Stellafane’s national recognition reflects its lasting role in popularizing amateur astronomy and encouraging people to build their own telescopes.
