Petit Jean State Park occupies three thousand four hundred seventy-one acres atop Petit Jean Mountain above the Arkansas River, where the Ouachita Mountains meet the Ozark Plateaus. Known for river-valley views, canyons, bluffs, caves, waterfalls, and other short scenic destinations, it also carries the legend of Petit Jean, a young French woman said to have died there after disguising herself to join an expedition into the Louisiana Territory. Much of the park’s historic character comes from Civilian Conservation Corps construction in the 1930s, including Mather Lodge and other rustic log-and-stone structures. Cedar Creek, Cedar Falls, Lake Bailey, cabins, campsites, and visitor facilities make it both a historic landmark and a developed vacation park.
