1790 Milestone
Transportation
13
In 1790, this area of Hooksett was part of Chester, and a milestone erected to aid unfamiliar travelers told them it was 16 miles to Chester Meeting House and 32 miles to Haverhill, Mass., a regional industrial center. Such milestones, erected by towns or businesses, typically stood up to 5' tall, were crudely carved out of roughly hewn granite, often referred to towns by first initial only, and could be both difficult to read and inaccurate.
