In Golden, the earliest popular bicycles were called velocipedes. On May 19, 1869, the Colorado Transcript reported that Jim Boyd, son of Judge Boyd and later a pioneer farmer east of Golden, rode south down Ford Street toward Clear Creek at full speed by Barnes’ mill when the machine shied to one side and hurled both rider and bicycle over the bridge abutment into the creek, a drop of about ten feet. He escaped with only a slight abrasion of the knee.
