The Mines Museum of Earth Science on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, Colorado, began in 1877 as a teaching collection founded by paleontologist and professor Arthur Lakes. Despite early disruption after Jarvis Hall burned in 1878, the collection continued to grow, later moving to Guggenheim Hall and then to Berthoud Hall, where it was informally exhibited until 2002. Since 2003 it has occupied a purpose-built campus space, and in 2019 it adopted its current name. Today it holds more than 2,500 fossils, gemstones, meteorites, minerals, and mining artifacts, including lunar samples and a leading public collection of Colorado minerals.
