Davis Peak, in Washington’s North Cascades near Gorge Lake and the Picket Range, is distinguished less by height than by the dramatic relief of its walls. Its vast Northeast Face drops 5,250 feet in a single horizontal mile, making it one of the two greatest one-mile vertical drops in the contiguous United States. Originally called Stetattle Peak, it was renamed in 1904 by the Reaburn climbing party for the Davis family, early homesteaders led by Lucinda Davis, who operated a roadhouse nearby around 1900 for trappers, miners, and other travelers. Its rugged form reflects uplift, faulting, repeated glaciation, and a stormy marine climate.
