Mount Ross is a prominent peak in Washington’s North Cascades, rising within North Cascades National Park and the Stephen Mather Wilderness above Newhalem, the North Cascades Highway, and the Skagit River. Its distinction lies less in overall elevation than in its dramatic relief, with its faces climbing about 5,400 feet above nearby creek and river valleys in a short distance. Officially named for James Delmage Ross, superintendent of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, the mountain is linked to the broader development history of the Skagit. Its rugged form reflects millions of years of uplift, faulting, and repeated glaciation, and its first recorded ascent came in 1969.
