In Long Beach, Washington, this museum preserves the history, art, and culture of kites while serving as a center of the city’s kite-flying traditions. Opened to the public in 1990 in a converted beach cottage, it grew from local enthusiasm sparked by a temporary exhibition at the 1989 Washington State International Kite Festival. Its early holdings included major donations of Japanese and other Asian kites, and the collection later expanded to more than 1,500 kites from 26 countries, along with models, exhibits, and archives. It also sponsors major annual kite events and remains a focal point for the community’s long-running celebration of kite culture.
