North Head Light is an active lighthouse on a rocky point near Ilwaco, Washington, overlooking a hazardous stretch of Pacific coast by the Columbia entrance. Built in 1897 after mariners reported that the older Cape Disappointment Lighthouse could be obscured by the headland, it was positioned to guide ships approaching from the north. Designed by Carl Leick, the station included a 65-foot tower on a 130-foot cliff and a full complex of support buildings that still survive. First illuminated in 1898, it has remained in service through repeated technological changes, while restoration since its 2012 transfer to Washington State Parks has preserved its historic character.
