The Bataan Memorial in Albuquerque, New Mexico, honors the veterans of the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Regiments for their sacrifice during the World War II defense of the Philippines. These units were the first to engage in combat against the Japanese following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite outdated equipment and lack of supplies, they played a crucial role in delaying Japanese advances, buying time for Allied forces. The units notably participated in the infamous Bataan Death March after being captured in April 1942, resulting in severe suffering and high mortality among POWs. New Mexico has the highest per capita prisoner of war population from that conflict. The memorial park, dedicated in 1943, serves as a living remembrance of their courage, and the memorial installed in 2002 further cements their legacy. These regiments, stemming from New Mexico's 111th Cavalry, have a long and storied history, having participated in key battles and receiving numerous honors for their heroism.
