Robie House, completed in 1910 on the University of Chicago campus for Frederick C. Robie, stands among Frank Lloyd Wright’s best-known Prairie style works and a landmark of modern residential design. Planned for a narrow urban lot, it used strong horizontal lines, cantilevered roofs, art glass, open interiors, and an attached garage to create a new kind of house emphasizing light, privacy, spaciousness, and fire-resistant construction. Though it served as a private home for less than twenty years, later uses by a seminary and the University of Chicago, along with preservation battles in 1941 and 1957, helped secure its survival as a museum, National Historic Landmark, and World Heritage Site.
