Midway Gardens was a vast entertainment complex in Chicago’s Hyde Park, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1914 on the site of the former Sans Souci amusement park. Conceived as a year-round European-style concert garden, it combined dining, drinking, music, dancing, and performance within a richly ornamented ensemble of courts, terraces, pools, pavilions, and three-story buildings. Its sculptural “sprites,” developed with Richard Bock and Alfonso Iannelli, became its most famous visual feature. Despite drawing broad audiences and notable performers, repeated ownership changes, shifting entertainment styles, and Prohibition undermined its finances. It closed and was demolished in 1929, but endured as one of Wright’s most ambitious lost works.
