Originally known as Cottonwood for the trees growing along the creek, this area became a gold discovery site in 1851 when John Thomas found gold here, and many rich mines were located nearby, including the Brasswire Mine and the Jillson Mine. In 1856, the name was changed to Henley in honor of the local senator.
