Hewitt Sawmill was built by Englishman John Hewitt. Shortly after arriving in St. Augustine in 1768, Hewitt bought 1,000 acres and began construction of this sophisticated water-powered sawmill. The mill provided much needed lumber for the houses of British Loyalist refugees who fled to the East Florida colony during the American Revolution. The sawmill was destroyed during the Patriot War during the Second Spanish Occupation, circa 1813. The archaeological park contains the remains of the sawmill, a large earthen dam, waterways, borrow pits, houses, roads, and other sites. The site was donated to the Florida Agricultural Museum in 2008.
