Beneath this site lie the remains of the mother of Sagoyewatha, Red Jacket, orator and leader of the Seneca Indians, whose domain once included the region around Keuka Lake. Red Jacket spent his boyhood near this spot with his father and mother, and the family cabin stood here in 1752. This was the home of Red Jacket's mother, and her burial place was disclosed to Dr. J.C. Wightman by Asa Brown, a white man adopted by the Jacket family, of the Wolf Clan of the Seneca Nation.
