The Ames 9 Pdr Cannon was cast in 1838 by N.P. Ames, and the term 9 Pdr refers to the weight of the solid shot it fires. A total of 29 pieces were cast, 18 by Ames, and although there are conflicting stories about whether the cannons ever entered military service, the Naples cannon bears the initials “G.T.” for George Talcott, a U.S. Ordnance Inspector. Of the 9 Pdr barrels cast, Naples’ cannon is believed to be the only one still in existence today. It arrived in Naples in 1876 in time for the country’s centennial celebration, remained in storage for many years, and underwent restoration in 2010–2011. It now serves as a showpiece in the annual Memorial Day parade and service and stands as a tribute to the military men and women of the Naples community, with special dedication to Staff Sergeant Robert Hubbard for his mission to keep the Ames 9 Pdr rolling.
