For over a century, a community of Benedictine nuns has been the longest continuous inhabitant and steward of the Kylemore estate, welcoming postulants, students, guests, and visitors from around the world. Over those years, the community has managed the estate, farmed the land, supported the local economy, and preserved its historic and natural heritage, while producing sustainable goods such as skincare products, chocolate, pottery, and honey. The estate’s landscape also carries literary and natural significance: Connemara writer Eileen Keane’s poem evokes Top Lake, Léim na Héilte, Castle Lake, and the mausoleum, and the Arctic char of these waters is a glacial relict species isolated in Ireland after the glaciers retreated.
