Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale preserves a rare remnant of old coastal land stretching from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic beachfront in an otherwise heavily developed setting. Its origins trace to 1893, when Hugh Taylor Birch began acquiring oceanfront property and eventually assembled a 3.5-mile beachfront estate. In 1940 he built his Art Deco and Mediterranean style home, Terramar, on the 180-acre property, where he lived until 1943; it now serves as the visitor center. The park also includes a freshwater lagoon, trails, beach, and campground, and supports diverse wildlife, including more than 200 bird species.
