Willie Kavanaugh Hocker of Wabbaseka, Arkansas, designed the Arkansas flag and was one of the state's most interesting personalities. She taught in Arkansas public schools for a number of years, and her knowledge of the details of the state's history was incorporated into her flag design. She had the unique distinction of being the only woman, except Betsy Ross, whose design for a flag was officially accepted. Hocker also received outstanding recognition for her poems and short stories.
