In Cumberland State Forest, Virginia, the grave of infant Charles Irving Thornton, born January 20, 1841, and dead March 12, 1842, is notable for an epitaph connected to Charles Dickens. Thornton, the son of Anthony and M. I. Thornton of Cumberland County, died at 13 months and 19 days. After his death, Dr. Deane, who had attended him, asked Dickens for words for the grave, and the inscription ultimately carved was slightly edited from Dickens's version. Listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, the site is significant as one of only two gravestones known to bear a Dickens epitaph, and the only one in the United States.
