Bear Creek Lake State Park in Cumberland is a 326-acre Virginia park within the 16,000-acre Cumberland State Forest, centered on a 40-acre artificial lake. Created in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps with local workers, the project also built pavilions, a concession stand, and fireplaces. The area opened in 1940 as a forestry wayside for swimming and boat rentals, then expanded after its 1958 transfer to the Division of State Parks and the addition of campgrounds in 1962. Today it offers lake recreation, trails, camping, and access to the surrounding forest, while preserving a notable example of New Deal-era park development.
