On Thursday, August 14, 1845, James Field recalled a squally ascent of bluffs several hundred feet high after crossing the Snake River, where wagons moved along a high narrow ridge barely wide enough for the road as steep sides fell away on both sides, and a gale ahead of a thunder shower struck directly across the track with such force that it seemed the wagons, teams, and all might be blown away. After crossing the Snake River, emigrants could follow Little Canyon Creek upstream for a mile to the north and then turn west, or head northwest from the crossing and travel up this draw; the two routes joined a short distance north of this location and then headed west to climb out of the Snake River Canyon.
