Chippewa Moraine Lakes State Natural Area in northern Chippewa County, Wisconsin, protects nine separate lake sites across about 30 square miles within a terminal moraine landscape. Set within the Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, and the Chippewa County Forest, it is important for preserving a largely undisturbed range of lake types and surrounding wetlands. The lakes differ markedly in physical and chemical conditions, and each supports its own assemblage of species. Together they include bog lakes, soft-water and hard-water seepage lakes, headwater lakes, and the unusual meromictic Fishpole Lake, whose permanently stratified waters create distinctive conditions.
