A committee formed by the Ohio Division United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Lieutenant General James Longstreet Camp 1658, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and others reported finding additional remains inside and outside the iron fence at Johnson’s Island in numbers greater than those indicated by the surviving 1890 grave markers. At the same time, it researched burial records, state rosters, and other primary documents to compile a list of people who died on the island in the military prison camp, including men from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, and some of unknown state. Monuments were dedicated on 21 June 2003 to those remembered there as having paid the ultimate price for Southern Rights and Freedom.
