Johnson's Island Civil War Prison and Fort Site possesses national significance as an important depot for the confinement of Confederate prisoners of war during the Civil War, and its Confederate cemetery, a contributing feature, contains the remains of more than 200 soldiers and sailors who died while imprisoned on the island.
