The Joseph H. Rainey House, a historic house at 909 Prince Street in Georgetown built in the 1760s, was the home of Joseph Hayne Rainey, the first elected Black representative in the United States Congress. Born a slave in Georgetown in 1832, Rainey gained some private education because his comparatively prosperous father operated a barbershop business in Charleston. After being drafted to serve the Confederacy as a laborer in 1862, he escaped with his wife to Bermuda, where he worked as a barber and continued his education. They returned to Georgetown in 1866, and in 1868 he was elected to the South Carolina State Senate. In 1870, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until 1878. After a career in government service, he retired in 1886 and died the following year. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
