Fountain Rock contained a typical Frederick County limestone quarry and battery of lime kilns that operated between about 1872 and 1955, producing powdered burnt lime for agricultural use and crushed stone for road surfacing. Although most of the original structures and equipment are gone, remnants of both operations have survived, including six of the eight original kilns, which are also referred to as continuous burning pot kilns.
