Nature
Big Island Lake Wilderness is a 5,856-acre protected area in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula within the Munising Ranger District of Hiawatha National Forest. Near Steuben and situated between Manistique and Munising, it is known as a remote landscape. Its boundaries follow a combination of roads and older transportation routes, with County Road 437 on the south, County Road 445 on the west, and Forest Road 2303 along the northeast edge. Part of the southern boundary also follows the abandoned railroad grade called Haywire Grade, now designated Forest Road 8109.
