DeSoto State Park is a large recreation area on Lookout Mountain in northeastern Alabama near Fort Payne, encompassing 3,502 acres of forest, rivers, waterfalls, and mountain terrain along the Little River. A separate northern section contains 104-foot DeSoto Falls, described as Alabama’s highest waterfall. Developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park was established in 1935 as State Park No. 5 and dedicated under its current name in 1939, when it was Alabama’s largest state park. Its extensive trails, lodging, and other visitor facilities, along with a museum on the CCC’s work, connect its scenic appeal with its New Deal origins.
